The Cincinnati Kid

From a script by Ring Lardner Jr. and Terry Southern, Norman Jewison’s 1965 film “is to poker what The Hustler was to pool, a fascinating suspense study of experts at work” (Halliwell’s Film and Video Guide). Steve McQueen projects his natural screen presence as the Cincinnati Kid, a small-time poker player in the 1930s, eager to prove himself against the ruthless Lancey “the Man” Howard (Edward G. Robinson) in a marathon round of high-stakes poker. Ann-Margret, Karl Malden, Rip Torn, and Joan Blondell (nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance) also star. The DVD includes scene-specific commentary on the game play by Phil Gordon and Dave Foley, hosts of Celebrity Poker Showdown, as well as a vintage featurette, The Cincinnati Kid Plays According to Hoyle.
